Working For Tanants

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I access the Members’ Area on the website?

The Members’ Area is available to all current TAROE members as a benefit of membership. The Members’ Area includes details of special news items, offers, and a dedicated forum to allow members to interact with TAROE and provide views and opinions on a broad range of issues to inform the TAROE stance in their representation of tenants.

Where membership is on an organisational basis, membership details will be issued to the organisation. That member organisation may issue their membership details to their members but in doing so, must accept responsibility for ensuring that their members treat their login details confidentially and act in an appropriate manner when accessing the members forum.

Where membership is for an individual tenant, membership details will be issued to the individual.

For more information on obtaining membership login details, please visit here.

Who does TAROE represent and how do I join?

TAROE is a membership organisation representing the interests of over 4 million tenants, strengthening the collective voice of tenants across England.

Membership is open to a range of bodies, including:

  • Regional Bodies
  • Umbrella Group Members
  • Single Organisation Member
  • Individual Member

Through joining TAROE, members are able to gain access to a range of benefits, including an ability to influence the national housing agenda; support and guidance on establishing and maintaining your organisation; receipt of regular newsletters and information; and attendance at national and regional conferences.

Full details on membership can be located here.

How is TAROE accountable to its members?

TAROE works hard to ensure that its views are representative of its members. A key way that TAROE ensures that this is the case is by maintaining an organisation that is tenant owned, tenant managed and tenant led. All members of the Board are democratically elected through the TAROE membership. Wherever possible, TAROE maintains close links with tenants at a grass roots level. It consults with tenants at its conferences, through direct contact with its members, and through its website.

I would like to become a Board member, how do I go about this?

All Board members of TAROE are democratically elected to the Board through the TAROE membership at its Annual General Meeting.

TAROE would encourage any tenant who is interested in becoming a Board member of TAROE to get in touch. Throughout the year a series of capacity building sessions are held to ensure that persons who wish to be considered for the Board are aware of the responsibilities that this position would entail.

I am a landlord, can I become a member of TAROE?

No. Membership of TAROE is only open to tenants and tenants groups. However, we have recognised that many landlords are also committed to promoting the needs of tenants. As a result, we have developed our “Friends of TAROE” scheme that allows landlords and other organisations who operate within the social housing sector to pledge their support for the work of TAROE.

Further details on the Friends of TAROE scheme can be located here.

Can I advertise on the TAROE website?

There are a number of options for advertising on the TAROE website.

One option is to sponsor the website, which will highlight your company logo and contain a link to your own website.

There are also options for posting articles that promote a range of activities and events which you may wish to highlight.

To find out more information on how to advertise on the TAROE website, please visit here.

Does TAROE represent tenants in the private sector?

No. TAROE represents the interests of tenants who live within the regulated housing sector, also known as the social housing sector.

Isn't TAROE a "northern" organisation?

No we are truly national with members from across England. Until a few years ago it was true that a majority of our members were from the North of England. We have worked hard to develop a more national membership, by holding our conferences and speaking at events in different parts of the country. This has led to a far better spread of awareness and membership. We will continue to promote TAROE in areas where we have fewer members.

How is TAROE funded?

TAROE receives its funding from a range of sources. In recent years, it has been successful with bids to the CLG's Tenant Empowerment Grant programme.

Any additional income that TAROE receives must be generated by the organisation as it receives no core funding. It does this through the provision of training and consultancy services, its Friends of TAROE initiative, and to a very limited extent, through its membership.
